1. Gather a plastic bottle and cut it in half horizontally. 2. Invert the top half and place it in the bottom half. 3. Layer a coffee filter or cloth at the neck of the bottle. 4. Add charcoal as the first layer, followed by sand and gravel. 5. Pour muddy water into the filter and collect the clean water in the bottom half. 6. Observe the clarity of the water — how effective was your filter?
