What this lesson teaches

This activity helps students visualize Earth's layers by creating edible models. By layering different ingredients, children can relate the structure of the Earth to familiar food items, making geology tangible and memorable.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, children learn best when they manipulate materials they can see and taste. Each layer corresponds to a part of the Earth, allowing learners to associate physical ingredients with scientific concepts, thereby reinforcing retention and understanding.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather ingredients: bread, peanut butter, jelly, banana slices, and chocolate spread. 2. Spread peanut butter on one slice of bread for the crust layer. 3. Add jelly on top for the mantle layer. 4. Place banana slices to represent the outer core layer. 5. Spread chocolate on another slice for the inner core. 6. Put the two slices together, cut your sandwich, and share your Earth model!
