Building a model helps children visualize and understand the Earth's structure. This hands-on approach makes the layers — crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core — tangible, allowing kids to grasp their relative thickness and composition.
Using physical representations taps into embodied cognition, allowing children to 'feel' the layers as they build. By manipulating different materials to represent each layer, they reinforce their understanding through active engagement and spatial awareness.
1. Gather 4 different colored play dough or clay for each Earth layer. 2. Flatten a piece of cardboard to serve as the base. 3. Start with the thickest layer (inner core) and form a ball with one color. 4. Add a thinner layer (outer core) using another color, covering the inner core. 5. Repeat for the mantle and crust, stacking and compressing each layer. 6. Label each layer with a small paper flag and discuss their features.
