      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition allows children to grasp abstract concepts by experiencing them physically. Digging into soil and observing layers promotes active learning, making the information more memorable and relatable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Find a small garden or a patch of soil in your backyard. 2. Use a small shovel to dig a hole about 30 cm deep. 3. Observe and note the different layers of soil you see (topsoil, subsoil, etc.). 4. Collect samples of each layer in separate containers. 5. Label each container with its layer name. 6. Discuss the properties of each layer with your family — what do you find interesting?
