1. Gather clear jars and soil samples from different locations (garden, playground, etc.). 2. Layer the soil samples in a clear jar, starting with the topsoil, then subsoil, and finally clay or rocks. 3. Use a spoon to mix in some water to each layer for results. 4. Observe how the layers settle and change appearance. 5. Label each layer with its name (topsoil, subsoil, etc.) using small tags. 6. Discuss what types of plants might grow best in each layer.
