      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By engaging in a tactile exploration, children utilize embodied cognition to connect physical experiences with scientific concepts. Digging and observing the soil layers reinforces memory by stimulating multiple senses, aligning with dual coding theory.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Grab a small spade and a transparent container. 2. Choose a garden or grassy area to dig. 3. Carefully dig out soil layers, about 10-15 cm deep, and place them in the container. 4. Separate the layers visually by gently shaking the container. 5. Observe and note differences in color, texture, and composition for each layer. 6. Discuss with your family the importance of each layer for plant life.
