      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Experiencing an ecosystem firsthand engages children's senses and promotes embodied cognition. By caring for their system and observing changes, they connect theory to real-life interactions within ecosystems.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Find a clear plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Fill the bottom half with small pebbles for drainage. 3. Add a layer of soil, about 5 cm deep. 4. Plant small seeds (like beans) in the soil and water lightly. 5. Place the top half upside down over the bottom half to create a greenhouse effect. 6. Observe daily — what changes do you see in growth?
