What this lesson teaches
Building a solar system model helps children understand relative sizes and distances of planets. This hands-on experience solidifies their comprehension of our celestial neighborhood and spatial relationships in astronomy.

Building a solar system model helps children understand relative sizes and distances of planets. This hands-on experience solidifies their comprehension of our celestial neighborhood and spatial relationships in astronomy.
Using embodied cognition, kids engage physically in model-making, reinforcing spatial awareness and conceptual understanding. The visual and tactile nature of constructing a solar system makes abstract concepts like scale more relatable and memorable.
1. Gather materials: one large ball (Sun), 9 smaller balls or marbles (planets). 2. Assign a scale: 1 meter = 1 AU (Astronomical Unit) for distances. 3. Arrange the large ball in the center as the Sun. 4. Measure and place the smaller balls at the corresponding distances from the Sun based on actual planetary distances. 5. Label each planet with its name using paper and tape. 6. Discuss with your family how the distances compare to what you typically see in pictures.
