This activity teaches children about sound vibrations and pitch. By using different materials, they can create varied sound properties, learning how pitch changes with tension and length.
By actively creating sounds through hands-on exploration, children engage with sound's physical properties. This ties into Bruner's CPA approach, allowing them to first create (concrete), then analyze (pictorial), and finally understand (abstract) sound waves.
1. Gather 5 different rubber bands and a small cardboard box. 2. Stretch each rubber band over the box, making sure they are different lengths. 3. Pluck each band and listen to the sounds. Compare their pitches. 4. Adjust the tension by pulling the bands tighter or looser, and pluck again. 5. Write down how the sounds changed with your adjustments. 6. Share your findings with a family member — which band produced the highest pitch?
