Constructing instruments allows children to engage in embodied cognition, as they physically create sound by manipulating objects. This hands-on experience aids in understanding the concept of sound waves and vibrations in a tangible way.
Try it with your learner
1. Gather materials: a water bottle, rubber bands, a cardboard box, and a wooden stick. 2. Stretch rubber bands around the cardboard box to form a makeshift guitar. 3. Pluck the rubber bands and listen to the different pitches produced. 4. Fill the water bottle with varying levels of water and blow across the top to create different notes. 5. Tap the wooden stick on the box and notice the vibrations — try different rhythms! 6. Share your sounds with someone — which instrument produced the best music?
