      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition principles suggest that physical interaction with materials deepens understanding. By creating a mini ecosystem, children visualize the relationships in nature, reinforcing their learning through direct experience.

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a clear plastic jar with a lid, some small pebbles, soil, and a tiny plant or seeds. 2. Place a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the jar for drainage. 3. Add a layer of soil on top of the pebbles, about 2 inches high. 4. Plant the tiny plant or scatter seeds on top of the soil. 5. Lightly water the soil and close the jar with the lid. 6. Observe the jar daily and note any changes in plant growth or moisture.
