      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Constructing a physical model engages embodied cognition, allowing students to see and manipulate spatial relationships, enhancing memory retention through active involvement.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 8 different-sized balls (like marbles, tennis balls, and balloons) to represent planets. 2. Paint or color each ball to match the planet it represents. 3. Use a long string or tape measure to define distances; place the sun (a larger ball) at one end. 4. Measure and place each planet at its scaled distance from the sun, using your creativity. 5. Label each planet with a piece of paper or sticky note. 6. Invite your family to view your solar system model and explain it to them.
