      The learning connection

By using visual separation methods, children can see the process of chromatography in action. The immediate feedback from observing the colors spread engages their curiosity and reinforces learning through embodied cognition.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Cut a coffee filter into a strip about 2 inches wide. 2. Draw a thick line with different colored markers about 1 inch from the bottom. 3. Fill a small jar with water, just enough to cover the bottom. 4. Stand the filter strip in the jar, ensuring the line is above water. 5. Watch as the colors climb up the filter — note the changes! 6. After 30 minutes, remove the strip and observe the separated colors.
