This activity allows students to observe chemical reactions in real-time. By mixing common kitchen ingredients, they visualize the transformation of substances and learn about acids, bases, and pH indicators.
Experiencing color changes as a result of reactions leverages embodied cognition, where physical observations help solidify abstract concepts. This hands-on experience supports retention and understanding of chemical properties through direct observation.
1. Gather a small bowl of lemon juice (acid) and a bowl of baking soda (base). 2. Add a few drops of red cabbage juice (natural pH indicator) to each bowl. 3. Observe the color of the lemon juice and baking soda mixture. 4. Slowly combine the two bowls together and watch for a color change. 5. Record your observations of the colors before and after mixing. 6. Discuss with your family what you think happened during the reaction.
