This activity shows how pH affects color in natural indicators. Children learn that acids and bases can change the hue of a substance, connecting chemistry to nature.
Using embodied cognition, children create their own pH indicators, allowing them to visualize and experience chemical reactions first-hand. This tangible interaction reinforces understanding of acid-base chemistry through observation and experimentation.
1. Chop a handful of red cabbage and place it in a pot. 2. Add 2 cups of water and boil for 10 minutes until the water turns purple. 3. Strain the cabbage juice into a clear container. 4. Prepare small dishes with lemon juice, baking soda solution, soap water, and vinegar. 5. Pour a spoonful of cabbage juice into each dish and observe the color change. 6. Record the colors and identify which solutions are acidic or basic!
