1. Gather 2 cups of soil from different outdoor locations (garden, park). 2. Layer the soil into a clear glass jar, starting with the topsoil, then subsoil, and finally any gravel or rocks as bedrock. 3. Use a spoon to gently tamp down each layer to keep them distinct. 4. Label each layer with sticky notes or paper slips. 5. Observe the differences in color and texture — what do you notice? 6. Discuss with your family how these layers affect plant growth and the environment.
