What this lesson teaches

Children learn about the composition of soil by physically layering materials. This hands-on experience reveals how different components — like sand, clay, and organic matter — create distinct soil layers, mirroring how they exist in nature.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By manipulating real materials, children engage in embodied cognition, making abstract concepts tangible. This sensory experience allows them to visualize the structure of soil, reinforcing knowledge through physical interaction and observation.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather small cups of sand, clay, and dried leaves. 2. Take a clear plastic bottle and cut it in half. 3. Start by adding a layer of sand at the bottom (about 5 cm). 4. Add a layer of clay on top of the sand (another 5 cm). 5. Finally, add a layer of dried leaves (about 3 cm) to represent organic matter. 6. Observe your soil layers and discuss what each layer does for plants.
