      The learning connection

Using the hands-on approach of layering materials engages children through embodied cognition, allowing them to physically interact with the concept of soil. By creating a visual model, they utilize dual coding theory, reinforcing their understanding through sight and touch, making it memorable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a clear plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Collect soil, sand, pebbles, and leaves from your garden. 3. Layer the pebbles at the bottom of the bottle (1 cm). 4. Add a layer of sand (1 cm) on top of the pebbles. 5. Pour in the soil to fill half the bottle, then add a layer of leaves. 6. Observe your soil layers and discuss what each layer does for plants.
