This activity helps children grasp the interdependence of living things in ecosystems. By setting up a closed environment, they'll witness how plants, water, and air interact to sustain life.
By engaging in embodied cognition, children physically manipulate objects to create their ecosystem. This hands-on experience enables them to visualize and understand complex relationships within nature as they observe changes over time.
1. Take a clear plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Add a layer of small pebbles at the bottom for drainage. 3. Place a handful of soil on top of the pebbles. 4. Plant small seeds or place small plants in the soil. 5. Pour a little water into the bottle, ensuring it’s moist but not flooded. 6. Seal the bottle halves back together and place it in a sunny spot. Check it daily for changes.
