      Why It Works

      The learning connection

This activity utilizes embodied cognition, as children manage real materials and observe biological processes in a closed environment. The visual and tactile experiences help solidify concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a clear jar with a lid and clean it thoroughly. 2. Add a layer of small pebbles (2 cm) for drainage. 3. Place a layer of activated charcoal (1 cm) to keep the water clean. 4. Add soil (5 cm) and plant small plants or grass seeds in it. 5. Pour a small amount of water into the soil, enough to moisten it but not drown the plants. 6. Close the jar and place it in sunlight — monitor for a week!
