Children learn about ecosystems by building a self-sustaining environment. This hands-on experience connects them to food chains and the interactions between plants and animals.
Engaging in the creation of a miniature ecosystem allows children to visualize and understand complex ecological concepts. Using Vygotsky's scaffolding, they build knowledge through experimentation and observation, connecting theory to real-life examples.
1. Gather a clear plastic bottle, soil, small stones, and a few plants or seeds. 2. Rinse the bottle and cut it in half, keeping the bottom part. 3. Place small stones at the bottom for drainage. 4. Add a layer of soil on top of the stones, about 5 cm deep. 5. Plant seeds or small plants in the soil, and water them lightly. 6. Cover the top with the cut-off bottle lid to create a closed environment — observe daily!
