      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By engaging them in the process of creating a worm hotel, children utilize embodied cognition, connecting physical actions to environmental concepts. Observing worm behavior firsthand deepens their understanding of soil health and decomposition.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Fill the bottom half with soil (about 10 cm deep). 3. Add small pieces of vegetable scraps like peels or leftovers. 4. Carefully place 5-10 earthworms on top of the scraps. 5. Cover the worms with another layer of soil and place the top half over it as a lid. 6. Observe the worm hotel over the week — what changes do you notice?
