Creating and racing boats engages children's spatial reasoning and experimentation. By modifying their designs and observing the results, they apply the scientific method and improve their understanding of physics in a playful setting.
1. Collect an empty plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Use the bottom half as the boat base and decorate it with markers and stickers. 3. Attach two straws on the sides as outriggers using tape for stability. 4. Fill a tub or basin with water and place your boat in it. 5. Push it gently and observe how it moves; try adding small weights to see what happens. 6. Race your boat with a sibling or parent — who goes faster?
