This activity introduces children to the concept of upcycling, turning waste into functional items. By creating something new from old materials, children learn to appreciate sustainability and the importance of reducing waste.
Engaging in creative projects allows children to apply knowledge of waste management actively. This hands-on experience strengthens their understanding of environmental responsibility through embodied cognition, as they physically create and reflect on their impact.
1. Gather 5 pieces of scrap paper, empty plastic bottles, or old containers. 2. Choose one item and brainstorm ideas for upcycling it (e.g., a plant pot or a bird feeder). 3. Decorate the item with colors, stickers, or natural materials like leaves. 4. If using a bottle for a planter, cut holes for drainage at the bottom. 5. Fill it with soil and plant a seed or a small plant. 6. Share your creation with family and discuss how it helps reduce waste.
