      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using Vygotsky's scaffolding principle, children learn through guided participation. Sorting familiar objects gives them hands-on experience, reinforcing cognitive connections between waste types and their environmental impacts.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Collect 10 different waste items from your home (paper, plastic, metal, food scraps). 2. Label four separate bins: 'Paper', 'Plastic', 'Metal', 'Compost'. 3. One by one, pick an item and decide which bin it belongs to. 4. Place the item in the correct bin and explain your choice. 5. Count how many items you correctly sorted into each bin. 6. Discuss with your family how recycling helps the environment.
