Engaging in tactile exploration promotes embodied cognition, allowing children to relate physical layers to their functions. As they dig and observe, cognitive load is reduced, making it easier to remember different soil types and their characteristics.
Try it with your learner
1. Gather a clear plastic bottle and soil samples from different locations (garden, park, etc.). 2. Cut the bottle in half and keep the top half to pour soil into. 3. Layer the soil samples into the bottle, starting with the sandiest at the bottom. 4. Add water to see how it percolates through each layer. 5. Observe and note how quickly water moves through each layer. 6. Discuss with your family which soil works best for plants!
