      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition allows children to grasp soil characteristics through tactile experiences. By physically feeling and comparing soils, they engage their senses and create lasting mental models, reinforcing the knowledge.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 3 sample jars and label them 'Clay', 'Sandy', and 'Loamy'. 2. Collect soil samples from different locations in your garden or park for each jar. 3. Observe each soil type: squeeze, feel, and note the texture. 4. Add a bit of water to each jar and mix. Watch how they react! 5. Compare the colors and clumping of each soil type — which one holds water best? 6. Share your findings with Amma or Appa — what did you discover about soil?
