By physically creating a water filter, children engage in embodied cognition — they understand filtration through hands-on experience, solidifying knowledge in a memorable way. This type of active learning allows them to visualize how ecosystems cleanse water in nature.
Try it with your learner
1. Gather a plastic bottle, scissors, and cotton or a cloth. 2. Cut the bottle in half and keep the top half as the filter. 3. Layer cotton or cloth at the neck of the bottle. 4. Add sand, small pebbles, and charcoal in layers above the cotton. 5. Pour dirty water into the top and collect the filtered water below. 6. Compare the clarity of the water before and after filtration.
