This activity helps children distinguish between weather and climate through visual representation. By actively creating their own weather wheel, they connect concepts of short-term weather changes versus long-term climate trends.
Using the dual coding theory, this activity combines visual (the wheel) and verbal (weather types) learning. Children engage with both the physical activity of spinning and the cognitive task of categorizing, reinforcing the concepts in a dynamic way.
1. Cut a large circle from a cardboard piece. 2. Divide the circle into 8 sections and label them with different weather types (sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, snowy, stormy, foggy, hot). 3. Create an arrow from another cardboard piece and attach it to the center using a pencil or straw as a pivot. 4. Decorate your wheel with colors and drawings related to each weather type. 5. Spin the wheel and track which weather appears most often over a week. 6. Discuss how that compares to the climate in your area.
