This activity teaches children about the water cycle and filtration by simulating how natural filters clean water. They will learn the importance of clean water in our lives and the role of natural materials in purifying water.
This hands-on experiment utilizes embodied cognition, allowing children to physically engage in the water filtration process. By observing the filtering results, they connect real-life scenarios to the scientific principles behind clean water.
1. Gather a plastic bottle, sand, gravel, and cotton or cloth pieces. 2. Cut the bottom off the plastic bottle and place it upside down in a bowl. 3. Layer cotton at the neck, followed by a layer of sand, and then gravel on top. 4. Pour dirty water slowly into the filter and watch it flow through. 5. Collect the filtered water in the bowl below and observe the difference. 6. Discuss with your family what you saw and learned about water filtration.
