This activity teaches children how solar energy can be harnessed for cooking. By constructing a solar oven, they learn about renewable energy sources and the importance of sustainability in everyday life.
Building a solar oven engages children in problem-solving and experimentation. This hands-on experience utilizes embodied cognition, allowing them to physically manipulate materials, which deepens their understanding of how sunlight can convert to heat.
1. Gather a cardboard box, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and black paper. 2. Line the inside of the box with black paper to absorb heat. 3. Cover the top of the box with plastic wrap, creating an airtight seal. 4. Use aluminum foil to create a reflective flap that directs sunlight into the box. 5. Place marshmallows or chocolate inside the box and set it in a sunny spot. 6. After 30 minutes, check how melted your treats are!
