Children learn about the interdependent relationships within ecosystems by building a self-sustaining environment. This hands-on activity illustrates how plants, soil, and water interact in a closed system, enhancing their understanding of biodiversity and ecological balance.
Using Bruner's CPA approach, children first experience the concrete (building the ecosystem), then represent it symbolically (drawing observations), and finally explore abstract concepts (ecosystem interdependence). This tiered approach deepens comprehension and retention.
1. Gather a clean glass jar with a lid, soil, small plants, and small stones. 2. Add a layer of small stones at the bottom of the jar for drainage. 3. Layer soil on top of the stones, about 3 inches high. 4. Plant small plants or seeds in the soil, leaving room for growth. 5. Water the plants lightly and seal the jar with the lid. 6. Place the jar in indirect sunlight and observe changes over the next few weeks.
