This activity illustrates the interdependence of organisms and their environment. By setting up a closed ecosystem, children witness firsthand how plants, water, and air interact and support life.
Engaging with a living model taps into embodied cognition, allowing children to visualize complex ecological interactions. Observing changes in their ecosystem nurtures curiosity and promotes scientific reasoning as they hypothesize and draw conclusions.
1. Take a clear plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Fill the bottom half with pebbles for drainage. 3. Add a layer of activated charcoal (1 teaspoon) to filter the water. 4. Place a layer of soil (2-3 cm) on top of the charcoal. 5. Plant small seeds or sprigs of grass in the soil and lightly water. 6. Cover with the top half of the bottle, creating a greenhouse effect. Observe daily!
