What this lesson teaches

This activity helps children understand the relationships in ecosystems by visually mapping who eats what. By creating a food chain, they learn about producers, consumers, and decomposers in a hands-on way.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using Bruner's CPA approach, children first create a concrete model of a food chain, then learn about its components abstractly. This tangible representation helps solidify complex interdependencies in ecosystems, making the information more relatable and easier to recall.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 5 blank sheets of paper and colored markers. 2. Draw and label one sun on the first sheet. 3. On the second sheet, draw a plant and write 'Producer'. 4. On the third sheet, draw a rabbit and write 'Primary Consumer'. 5. On the fourth sheet, draw a fox and write 'Secondary Consumer'. 6. Connect the sheets with arrows showing the flow of energy from the sun to the plants to the animals.
