      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Constructing a food chain physically allows children to visualize relationships in nature. Using Bruner's CPA approach, they engage with concrete items, leading to a deeper understanding of abstract ecological concepts.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather items: a leaf (producer), a small toy insect (primary consumer), and a toy frog (secondary consumer). 2. Lay them on a table in a line: leaf — insect — frog. 3. Connect your items with arrows drawn on paper, showing who eats whom. 4. Discuss with your family how energy flows through your food chain. 5. Add one more toy or item to represent a decomposer. 6. Share your food chain with someone and explain each role!
