      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using physical objects to represent different organisms engages children through embodied cognition. By arranging items in a sequence, children reinforce their understanding of ecosystems while developing spatial awareness.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather materials: a piece of paper, scissors, colored pens, and 5 different items (like a leaf, toy animal, or fruit). 2. Draw and cut out a sun, a plant, and animal shapes from the paper. 3. Arrange your items on the table in a sequence: sun ➜ plant ➜ animal. 4. Label each item as producer, primary consumer, and secondary consumer. 5. Discuss how energy flows from one to another. 6. Share your food chain with an adult or sibling and explain each part!
