      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition allows children to learn through direct interaction with their environment. By digging and observing, they engage multiple senses, enhancing memory retention and understanding of soil's role in sustaining plants and animals.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Find an area with visible soil layers, like a garden or park. 2. Use a small spade or trowel to dig a hole about 30 cm deep. 3. Observe and collect samples from different soil layers as you dig. 4. Place each layer in separate containers and label them (topsoil, subsoil, etc.). 5. Draw a diagram showing the different layers and their characteristics. 6. Discuss with your family how these layers affect plant growth.
