      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By constructing a mini ecosystem, children engage in embodied cognition — they physically create a model that helps them visualize how organisms interact. This hands-on approach reinforces concepts of ecosystems, enhancing retention and understanding through real-life observation.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a clear glass jar, soil, small plants (like basil), and pebbles. 2. Place a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the jar for drainage. 3. Add a layer of soil on top of the pebbles, about 2 inches high. 4. Plant the small plants in the soil, leaving space between them. 5. Lightly water the plants and cover the jar with a lid or plastic wrap. 6. Observe your mini ecosystem daily — note any changes or growth!
