This activity demonstrates water filtration using natural materials, showing how ecosystems purify water. Understanding filtration helps children appreciate the importance of clean water and environmental conservation.
Using embodied cognition, children learn how each layer in the filter plays a role in cleaning water, reinforcing their understanding through tactile experiences. The process of building a filter and seeing actual results engages them in a problem-solving mindset.
1. Gather a plastic bottle, scissors, and 4 layers: cotton, sand, gravel, and charcoal. 2. Cut the plastic bottle in half and use the top half as a funnel. 3. Layer the materials: place cotton at the neck, followed by charcoal, sand, and gravel in that order. 4. Pour dirty water (with soil and leaves) into the funnel. 5. Collect the filtered water in a clean container. 6. Observe and compare the filtered water with the dirty water — what changes do you see?
