This activity illustrates the principles of ecosystems and interdependence in nature. Children learn how plants produce oxygen and food while creating habitats that support diverse organisms, making them appreciate sustainability.
Hands-on gardening taps into embodied cognition, allowing children to see the direct impact of their actions on the ecosystem. As they nurture their garden, they experience the interconnectedness of life, fostering a deeper understanding of conservation principles.
1. Gather a clear glass jar, small pebbles, activated charcoal, potting soil, and seeds (like coriander or basil). 2. Layer the bottom of the jar with 1 inch of pebbles for drainage. 3. Add a thin layer of activated charcoal to filter the air and water. 4. Pour in 2-3 inches of potting soil on top of the charcoal. 5. Plant the seeds by making small holes in the soil and gently pressing them in. 6. Water lightly, cover the jar with plastic wrap, and place it in indirect sunlight — observe daily!
