This activity teaches children to identify soil types through tactile exploration. By feeling and observing various soils, they learn the distinct characteristics, such as texture and color, which relate to the environment around them.
Embodied cognition helps children understand concepts by physically interacting with their environment. By engaging their senses, kids can categorize and compare soil types, strengthening connections between physical properties and scientific classification.
1. Collect 3 different soil samples from your backyard (sand, clay, loam). 2. Place each soil sample in separate clear jars. 3. Observe the color and texture of each soil. 4. Feel each soil with your fingers and note differences. 5. Use a magnifying glass to examine any small particles or roots. 6. Discuss with Amma or Appa which soil is best for plants and why.
