This activity demonstrates how ecosystems function through the interactions of plants, soil, and water. Children learn about the nitrogen cycle, photosynthesis, and the interconnectedness of life while observing changes over time.
By building their own ecosystem, children engage in embodied cognition, experiencing the life cycle and ecological balance firsthand. The visual and tactile elements create a vivid representation of ecosystem dynamics, making abstract concepts concrete and memorable.
1. Take a clean plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Layer small stones at the bottom for drainage (1 inch). 3. Add a layer of soil (2 inches) and plant small seeds or a small plant. 4. Add a little water to moisten the soil, but don’t soak it. 5. Cover the top half of the bottle to create a closed environment. 6. Place it in indirect sunlight and observe changes over the next week.
