Hands-on creation of a miniature ecosystem allows children to visualize and connect abstract concepts like interdependence and the water cycle. This embodies cognitive principles of Bruner's CPA approach, as they engage with the material through action, representation, and abstraction.
Try it with your learner
1. Gather a clear jar with a lid, soil, small plants, and a little water. 2. Add a layer of small pebbles at the bottom of the jar for drainage. 3. Layer soil on top of the pebbles, about 2-3 inches deep. 4. Plant small plants in the soil and gently press them down. 5. Add a tablespoon of water to moisten the soil, but don't drown the plants. 6. Seal the jar and place it in indirect sunlight — observe changes over the next week!
