      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging children in composting utilizes embodied cognition, as they physically handle waste and see its transformation. This tactile experience reinforces the cycle of life and helps them grasp the value of waste management visually and practically.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather kitchen scraps like fruit peels, vegetable trimmings, and coffee grounds. 2. Find a container with holes for airflow (like a bucket). 3. Layer the scraps at least 3 inches high in the container. 4. Add dry leaves or shredded paper on top to balance moisture. 5. Stir the mixture every week to aerate it and speed up decomposition. 6. After 4-6 weeks, observe the changes and smell the earthy aroma!
