This activity immerses children in environmental justice issues. They learn to articulate and defend different perspectives, sharpening their critical thinking and communication skills.
Debating complex topics allows for the application of Vygotsky's scaffolding, where children build their understanding through discussion and argumentation. By exploring diverse viewpoints, they gain empathy and deeper insights into ethical dilemmas.
1. Choose an environmental issue (like plastic pollution or deforestation). 2. Split into two teams: one for, one against the issue. 3. Research your position online or in books for 5 minutes. 4. Prepare 3 key arguments for your stance. 5. Hold a debate where each team presents their arguments for 10 minutes. 6. Reflect on what you learned from opposing views — how did it change your perspective?
