This activity teaches children about excavation methods while demonstrating how artifacts reveal historical narratives. By physically digging and uncovering objects, children learn the importance of stratigraphy and context in archaeology.
Engaging in a simulated dig employs embodied cognition, allowing children to connect physical actions with the learning content. The hands-on experience cultivates curiosity and motivates retention by making the past tangible and exciting.
1. Fill a container with sand or soil, about halfway full. 2. Bury 5 small items (like toys or coins) within the soil. 3. Use a small shovel or spoon to carefully dig and uncover the items. 4. As you find each item, note what you think it could be and its historical significance. 5. Create a simple chart listing the items you found and their 'ages' (imagined). 6. Share your findings with your family — what stories do these items tell?
