      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Debate fosters cognitive development through Vygotsky's scaffolding, enabling children to build on their knowledge by articulating ideas and responding to feedback. The structured format creates a supportive environment that enhances confidence and public speaking skills.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a shoebox and write 'Debate Topics' on it. 2. Gather 10 slips of paper and write different debate topics on each (e.g., 'Should school start later?'). 3. Shuffle the slips and pick one out of the box. 4. Spend 10 minutes preparing arguments for and against the topic. 5. Pair up with a family member and debate for 3 minutes each, switching sides after. 6. Reflect on what arguments were most convincing — why did they work?
