      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition lets children grasp geometric concepts through physical shape manipulation. As they create stories with the shapes, they internalize spatial relationships, supporting Vygotsky's scaffolding by building on familiar knowledge.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather colored paper and scissors. 2. Cut out 7 tangram shapes (2 large triangles, 1 medium triangle, 1 square, 1 parallelogram, and 1 small triangle). 3. Use the shapes to create a treasure map with a starting point and 'X' marks. 4. Share your treasure story with family, describing where the treasure is hidden! 5. Swap maps with a family member and follow their directions. 6. Reflect on how the shapes helped create the story and map.
