What this lesson teaches

Sudoku enhances logical reasoning and deduction skills as children learn to place numbers based on existing clues. This activity teaches them to recognize patterns and apply rules systematically, bridging the gap between abstract logic and concrete problem-solving.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging with Sudoku puzzles fosters cognitive load management, as children must hold multiple constraints in mind while deducing the placement of numbers. This promotes Vygotsky's scaffolding, where children build on their prior knowledge through collaborative play and peer support.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Draw a 6x6 grid and fill in 10 random numbers, leaving the rest blank. 2. Set a timer for 10 minutes. 3. Work together with a family member to fill in the blanks with numbers 1-6. 4. Discuss which numbers can go where based on Sudoku rules. 5. Check if the completed puzzle follows the rules — each number appears once per row and column. 6. Swap grids and race again with a new Sudoku challenge!
