      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, this activity encourages children to physically engage in storytelling, making them co-creators of their narratives. As they see their hand shapes transform into characters, they connect actions with ideas, enhancing retention and comprehension.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Find a strong flashlight and a blank wall or sheet. 2. Position the flashlight a meter away from the wall. 3. Use your hands to create different shapes (like animals or characters) in front of the light. 4. Invent a short story using the shapes as characters. 5. Act out the story, changing hand shapes to show different actions. 6. Share your shadow story with a family member — what did they think?
